Today we’re talking about something that’s near and dear to my heart, and that’s braiding your own hair.
Now, I know what you might be thinking, “But I don’t have an army of hairstylists at my beck and call, why would I bother braiding your own hair?”, but let me tell you, there’s something so empowering and satisfying about being able to create a beautiful braid all on your own.

Whether you’re looking to switch up your hairstyle or just need a quick and easy way to keep your locks out of your face, learning how to braid your own hair is a skill that every glam queen should have in her arsenal.
So, grab your hairbrush and a few hair ties, and let’s dive into this braiding tutorial together!
Types Of Braids
Three-Strand Braid

First up, we have the trusty three-strand braid. This is the perfect starting point for anyone new to braiding, and with a little practice, you’ll be a pro in no time.
Here’s a detailed guide to help you get started:
- Step 1: Separate the hair into three sections. Hold the section of hair on the right and continue with crossing it over the middle section of the hair.
- Step 2: Do the same with the left section, crossing it over the middle section, so that it becomes the new middle section.
- Step 3: Repeat step 2, crossing the right section over the one that’s in the middle.
- Step 4: Continue alternating between steps 2 and 3 until you reach the end of your hair.
- Step 5: Use your hair tie to secure the braid.
French Braid

You’ve mastered the three-strand braid, so now it’s time to kick things up a notch with the French braid.
This style is a little more intricate than the three-strand braid, but with a little patience and practice, you’ll be braiding like a pro in no time.
Here’s my guide to help you create a stunning French braid:
- Step 1: Start by sectioning off a small triangle of hair at the top of your head, and create three equal sections.
- Step 2: Start off by crossing the right section of hair over the middle section.
- Step 3: Cross the left section of hair over the middle section.
- Step 4: Now, instead of just crossing the right section over the middle, take a small section of hair from the right side of your head and add it to the right section of the braid.
- Step 5: Cross the right section (with the added hair) over the middle section.
- Step 6: Repeat step 4 on the left side of your head, adding a small section of hair to the left section of the braid.
- Step 7: Cross the left section (with the added hair) over the middle section.
- Step 8: Continue adding small sections of hair to each side of the braid as you cross them over the middle section.
- Step 9: When you reach the nape of your neck, you can finish off the braid as a regular three-strand braid and secure it with a hair tie.
Dutch Braid
This style is similar to the French braid, but instead of crossing the sections of hair over the middle, you’ll be crossing them under.
This creates a beautiful, inverted braid that’s perfect for any occasion you can easily do so long as you follow these steps:
- Step 1: Start by sectioning off a small triangle of hair at the top of your head. Divide it into three sections.
- Step 2: Begin your braid by crossing the right section of hair under the middle section.
- Step 3: Continue with crossing the left section of hair under the middle section.
- Step 4: Now, instead of just crossing the right section under the middle, take a small section of hair from the right side of your head and add it to the right section of the braid.
- Step 5: Next up, try crossing the right section (with the added hair) under the middle section.
- Step 6: Repeat step 4 on the left side of your head, adding a small section of hair to the left section of the braid.
- Step 7: Cross the left section (with the added hair) under the middle section.
- Step 8: Continue adding small sections of hair to each side of the braid as you cross them under the middle section.
- Step 9: When you reach the nape of your neck, you can finish off the braid as a regular three-strand braid and secure it with a hair tie.
Top Tips For Before And After Braiding Your Hair
Braiding your hair is not just about the actual braiding process, but also about taking care of your hair before and after the style.
Here are some of my top tips for making sure your braids look fabulous from start to finish:
Prep Your Hair
Before you start braiding, make sure your hair is clean and detangled (see also “How To Clean Hair Brushes“). You can also use a leave-in conditioner to add some moisture and reduce frizz.
Use The Right Tools
Having the right tools can make all the difference when it comes to braiding. A good comb or brush, hair ties, and bobby pins can help you achieve a perfect braid.
Protect Your Hair
Braids can be a great protective style, but they can also put a lot of tension on your hair.
To prevent breakage and damage, make sure your hair is not too tightly braided, and avoid sleeping with braids in for too long.
Refresh Your Braids
To keep your braids looking fresh, you can use a dry shampoo or texturizing spray to absorb oil and add volume. You can also use hair oil to keep your scalp moisturized and prevent itchiness.
Remove Your Braids Carefully
When you want to take out your braids, do it gently and don’t rush the process.
Instead, take it slow and take advantage of the detangling sprays and conditioners that can help you ease any tangles and avoid ripping or pulling at your hair.
The Bottom Line
By following these tips, you’ll be able to create stunning braids that not only look great but also keep your hair healthy and protected.
And, of course, don’t be afraid to experiment with different textures and types of hair ties for a unique look. Now go and have fun braiding your hair!
